Hanabi Press
Hanabi Press is the independent publishing imprint I created to bring my books—and later, my designs—into the world on my own terms.
When I finished writing Silence in the Basement, I knew traditional publishers might hesitate to take on a body horror novel. Even if I landed an agent, the odds of full creative control were slim. I wanted to understand the publishing process from start to finish and build something of my own, so I founded Hanabi Press.
The name “Hanabi” (花火) means fireworks in Japanese. It’s made up of two characters: “hana” (花), meaning flower, and “bi” (火), meaning fire. The word captures something beautiful, fleeting, and explosive—just like a good story or a spark of creativity.
Over time, Hanabi Press evolved beyond books. I started designing a line of bookish streetwear and accessories—pieces that reflect my love of fashion and literature. While there’s plenty of book merch out there, I found most of it either low quality or too on-the-nose. Hanabi streetwear is different: minimal, wearable, and designed by me to feel cool—even to casual readers.
